What is hydrodermabrasion?
A handpiece uses a fine jet of water and serums with gentle suction to cleanse, exfoliate and hydrate the skin in one go.
A mild acid step loosens dull surface cells, the suction lifts them away, and hydrating serums go on last.
Who it may suit, and who should wait
It is a lovely place to start if you are new to treatments, a little nervous, or would rather avoid needles. Many people choose it when their skin looks dull, tired or a little congested.
It is better to wait if you have sore, inflamed breakouts, sunburn, broken skin or a skin condition that is flaring. If you have a skin condition or take medicine for your skin, check with your doctor first.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, check with your doctor or midwife, and tell me, so we can decide together whether to go ahead or wait.
We go through your skin, health and medicines in person before anything starts. If your skin is sensitive, I patch test first, so if you are new to me, please message me before you book and I’ll arrange it. All treatments are for adults aged 18 and over.
What it feels like on the day
Your appointment starts with a chat and a proper look at your skin, so there is no separate visit for your consultation. Then you lie back and I explain each step as we go. It feels like a cool, wet brush with light suction, and the mild acid step may tingle for a moment. Most people find it relaxing. I check in throughout and stop whenever you ask. Allow about 30 minutes.
How skin may look afterwards
Most people are a little pink for an hour or two, and many notice their skin looks fresher and feels softer. The fresh look from one session may last days rather than weeks, and results vary from person to person.
Congested skin can occasionally break out in the days afterwards, so avoid booking your first session just before something important. Skin can also react to a serum, which is why we check your skin first. I suggest leaving make-up off until the next morning.
How often, and is there a course?
I do not set a course for this one. Some people come once as a refresh. If you enjoy it, I usually suggest around four weeks between appointments. If a simple home routine would do more for you than another appointment, I will say so.
Aftercare
You go home with written aftercare and a direct line to me. The usual advice:
- Wear SPF every day, whatever the weather.
- Keep skincare gentle, and pause exfoliating acids and retinol for 48 hours.
- Skip the gym, saunas and swimming for 24 hours.
- Try not to touch or pick at your skin.
- Message me if anything does not look or feel right.
- Messages are not monitored overnight. If you feel unwell after any treatment, call 111, or 999 in an emergency.
Hydrodermabrasion, microdermabrasion or dermaplaning?
All three are gentle. Hydrodermabrasion is wet and cooling, with serums and suction. Microdermabrasion polishes away dull surface cells with a diamond-tipped wand. Dermaplaning uses a sterile, single-use blade to lift dull surface cells and fine peach fuzz. Not sure which? Tell me what you are noticing and I will suggest one, or none.
